Please know, although I  was compensated for my time reviewing this product and hosting the giveaway, the opinions expressed within are 100% my own. Thank you for your continued support of my family!

Summer and I have an on again, off again relationship.

I love the slower pace. I love the night swims. I love the idea that we can do whatever we want for the day.

But I struggle with the reality that I have two kids that need way more involvement and activity than my “idea” of summer really allows.

Maybe you can relate?

Raise your hand if you have turned into a wild-eyed, crazed, hypervigilient, disaster momma over trying to get your progeny off the screens this summer.

Yep, me too.

A few weeks ago, in a moment of despair, I decided to take the bull by the horns and find a few new activities for us to try. (My kids are on to me and the “Let’s Play Checkers” bit. I needed something different – something exciting.)

You can imagine my delight when I got my hands on the IDO3D Vertical Pen.

Y’all, it is like combining sensory play with art, and then adding a cool light show while you are at it.

3D Pens For Kids

On a particularly hot day, when my children were particularly screen focused, I decided it was time to try the new pen.

One of the things I was worried about is how perfectionist my children can be, if an art project doesn’t go exactly as planned. I knew from the directions that this was a project that would take some time to master. (And truthfully, I felt grateful. The more time they spend mastering the IDO3D pen, the less time on the screen or worse – fighting with each other.)

After watching this video with them, and getting everyone all riled up, I explained that this is a new medium for art. It takes time and effort to master the more complex creations. I tried to tell them that there are online classes that will help them learn more advanced techniques. They ignored me and tore into the box.

We had the best time!

Summer Activities for Kids

If you think you might enjoy this activity with your children, here is what I recommend –

  1. Warn your kids that this is art. It takes time to master.
  2. Let them just explore with the pen, the light, and the sticky ink. Allow them to have fun with it – my kids forgot all about trying to make something elaborate, and instead had a great time with the technology of it all.
  3. Once your children have gotten the initial trial and error out of the way, and are more comfortable with the pen itself, use all the great, FREE resources available online. They have a full site of art courses that rival any art class you would pay for your child to attend.

This really has been a great option for screen-free summer fun around here. If you would like one of your own, I have good news! IDO3D Vertical is giving away three pens as part of their summer sweepstakes. Enter to win here.
