Top Online Reading Programs For Learning Differences (that you can actually afford!)

I remember clearly the first time my youngest son sat down at the computer for a reading lesson.

He was eight years old and had been struggling for years with standard curriculum approaches.

He was totally defeated by his lack of progress.

I was totally defeated by his lack of progress.

With only two months left in the school year, I decided to try an online reading program.  I thought maybe, just maybe, the change of pace might make reading a little more enjoyable. What I found was that it was not only more fun, but it worked unlike anything else we had tried.

Online learning engaged his brain in ways that standard programs could not.

Visual, dynamic, responsive, and hands-on – online reading was what first “clicked” in my little guy’s progress as a reader with learning differences.

Please know, although I was compensated for my time in writing this post, my opinions are 100% my own. I enjoy sharing products that I find useful for my family, in the hopes that they might be useful for yours as well.

Online learning resources have become an essential part of my approach to accommodating my son in reading and language arts (even more so now with text to speech technology).

Which is why I cannot believe that after six full years of homeschooling, I only just now learned about Homeschool Buyers Co-Op.

With over 190,000 families, The Homeschool Buyers Co-op is the world’s largest buyers club for homeschooling families.  The Homeschool Buyers Co-op has an award-winning selection of language arts products, including curriculum for phonics, reading, writing, vocabulary, spelling and grammar.

With savings up to 93% (compared to regular price outside of the Homeschool Buyers Co-op) on language arts programs – including those for children with learning differences – I have been impressed with the quality of the programs offered and even more so at the deep discounts available.

Here are my favorites for online learning, available through The Homeschool Buyers Co-Op.

Online Reading Programs For Learning Differences

Reading Eggs

This is the program that we started with when my son was eight. Our change to the Reading Eggs’ online learning environment made a significant difference in his reading ability. (Little did I know, it was available through the Homeschool Buyers Co-Op for 25% off!)

Reading Eggs is an online reading program that seeks to make learning essential reading skills a fun and motivating experience. It does this providing a huge variety of reading lessons, game-like activities, memorable funny songs, animated characters, and rewards.

What’s more, Reading Eggs supports each child’s learning by offering individual, one-on-one lessons. These online lessons help your child easily progress at his or her own rate.

Learning Ally

As noted dyslexia expert Sally Shaywitz has said, “When you can’t read quickly, that’s a disability.”

Homeschool Byers Co-Op provides substantial discounts for annual individual memberships with Learning Ally™, a non-profit organization that provides audiobooks to students with learning disabilities and visual impairments.

Learning Ally is used by over 300,000 students with learning disabilities and visual impairments as an aid to overcome their struggles with reading.

  • 97% of parents say Learning Ally has helped their child
  • 92% would recommend Learning Ally to a friend
  • 3 out of 4 parents say their child has become a better reader after using audiobooks

I have used Learning Ally for years with my son and completely agree.

Ginger Software

With Ginger on your computer, your child will be able to prepare written assignments independently and confidently. Ginger is an intelligent, contextual spell checker and grammar checker that enables users to write texts that are error-free.

FEATURES AND ADVANTAGES:

  • Contextual Spelling & Grammar Checker
  • Full-Sentence Correction
  • Misused Words Correction
  • Text-To-Speech (Ginger Premium)
  • Progress Reports (Ginger Premium)

I am really looking forward to trying this program with my son. He is at an age where he craves independence and this seems like an excellent next step!

MindPlay Virtual Reading Coach

This program is wonderful!

A distinguishing feature is it’s “virtual reading coaches” – short video segments in which speech pathologists and experienced teachers coach the student through the points covered in the curriculum. These video segments give your student the opportunity to get direct, “personal” instruction from trained speech pathologist and reading coaches.

It’s like having access to an educational therapist and speech pathologist right in your own home!

Discovery Education Streaming Plus

Not just for language arts, this is a fully integrated program with content across multiple subjects.

It’s like having the entire DVD selection of your local public library available to you from the convenience of your home.

But it’s not just a collection of videos that you watch from beginning to end. This library has been organized into video clips, categorized, close-captioned, and supplemented with lesson plans, teaching guides, interactive simulations, images, audio resources, and other resources and materials that you can incorporate into virtually every aspect of your homeschool curriculum.

Easy for my son and easy for me!
